WHAT DOES THE FUTURE HOLD FOR LEARNING?

CRITICAL THINKING AT UNIVERSITY IN THE WORLD OF AI

ONLINE COURSE - COMING SOON

Launching in Summer 2026, I have crafted this course for university students facing the unique challenges and opportunities of today’s learning environment, including the widespread availability of AI.

You may be a university student yourself, a parent or teacher of a young person finishing their schooling, or an academic or university looking to support your students.

The course draws on my two decades of teaching at the University of Edinburgh, as well as my widely-adopted Oxford University Press textbook, Becoming a Critical Thinker: for your university studies and beyond.

COURSE STRUCTURE:

The course comprises three modules:

  1. University in the World of AI

  2. Critical Thinking as a Universal Skill

  3. Whether, When and How to Incorporate AI into Learning

This self-paced course comprises videos, guided exercises, and further resources to explore topics we cover in greater detail. It complements existing university offerings and ensures students are able to make the most of their university degree. Students could complete the course within a day of dedicated study, or spread the experience over a number of weeks.

course aims:

My aim is to empower young people to:

  • appreciate the fundamental importance of critical thinking to university learning and graduate employability,

  • become better informed about the benefits and risks of using AI in learning,

  • understand different options in how they can engage with AI, and

  • feel empowered to make their own decisions.

TO SIGN UP:

To receive updates on the launch, bonus video content as it becomes available, and exclusive launch discounts, join my community of critical thinkers by signing-up below or via my contact page. I will be in touch as soon as the course goes live in Summer.

Course Testimonials

An exceptionally engaging and thoughtful course that addresses a challenge many students are already grappling with. Sarah clearly knows the space and the problems within it extremely well, which comes through in the practical examples, personal anecdotes, and balanced approach throughout.
— Aryan Chibber, University of Edinburgh Student
This course offered me a thoughtful and timely exploration of critical thinking in the age of AI, encouraging deeper engagement rather than passive use of technology. I deeply valued how the guided exercises prepared by Sarah pushed me to deeply reflect on my own assumptions. Additionally, the exercises helped me recognise that meaningful learning requires curiosity, questioning, and self-awareness.
— Cheryl-Joan Kashitala, MSc Planetary Health, The University of Edinburgh
In a world where information is increasingly being influenced, augmented, and generated with and by AI, the need for structured critical thinking is more important than ever. Dr Ivory’s online short course provides students with the opportunity to engage with theoretically underpinned, clearly structured, and interesting materials to develop their critical thinking skills, which are not only applicable at university, but also in life more generally.
— Dr Emily Yarrow, Senior Lecturer
Sarah is simply awesome. As a lecturer she is inspirational, as a researcher she is formidable, and as a colleague she is a rock.
— Professor Dave Reay, Executive Director, Edinburgh Centre for Carbon Innovation
